How to cat-proof a window: net, guard or closed window, depending on how it opens
Share
To cat-proof a window, start with the way it opens. A large window opened wide is closed off with a net stretched across the whole opening; a tilt-and-turn window, a hopper window or a roof window needs a fitted guard or a wedge; and without protection, the window stays shut whenever your cat is alone.
Why is an open window dangerous for a cat?
An open window exposes a cat to two accidents: the fall, and getting stuck in a tilted window.
On falls, according to International Cat Care, the righting reflex is not enough: the fall has to be high enough for the cat to twist round, but not so high that it is badly hurt. Most injured cats are young, often under a year old, falling while playing or chasing a bird. According to the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, a fall from the second or third floor is already enough to injure a cat.
On tilted windows, the same university describes a cat trying to squeeze through the gap, getting stuck and sliding down the slit as it struggles: compression between the last rib and the pelvis, hind legs trapped, sometimes paralysed.
After a fall or entrapment, this is a veterinary emergency, even if your cat seems fine. The Vienna university notes that serious breathing problems can appear within 48 hours, and neurological signs up to 72 hours after the fall.
Which protection suits which type of window?
Window protection for a cat depends on how the window opens: a net for a large opening, a guard or a wedge for anything that tilts.
| Type of opening | The risk | The right protection | At Pelux |
|---|---|---|---|
| Large window opened wide | Falling | A net or mesh stretched across the whole opening | Yes: the balcony net, 3 × 4 m size |
| Tilt-and-turn window, in the tilted position | Getting stuck in the V-shaped gap | A side guard that fills both triangles | No |
| Hopper window | Getting stuck, or slipping through the gap | A guard or a wedge that limits the opening | No |
| Roof window | Getting out onto the roof, then falling | A guard made for that window model, or the window shut | No |
For the first row, the Pelux balcony net is designed for balconies, and its product page names ‘a large window or a small balcony’ for the 3 × 4 m size. A French door opening onto a balcony is a balcony question: the balcony is what you close off. The rest of the range is in safety and care.
A fly screen on its own does not count: according to the Vienna university, it is often held by light Velcro strips and a cat damages it easily. It recommends aviary wire or a wire-reinforced net.
What should you know before fitting a net to a large window?
The Pelux balcony net is fixed with a cord and hooks that need drilling, and its product page describes no fitting specific to a window.
- What the page says. Polyethylene and nylon thread braided with a strand of stainless steel, a 3 cm mesh knotted at every crossing, 3 m high. The cord runs through the edge meshes, then hooks onto hooks fixed to the wall: so you need to drill, and if you rent, ask your landlord first.
- What it does not say. Neither how to adapt its 3 m height to a window, nor where to place the hooks around the frame. We will not make it up: if you cannot see where to fix sturdy hooks around your window, the net is probably not the right answer for it.
- What applies everywhere. Net taut with no folds, check for the smallest gap at the bottom and sides. No net is unbreakable: check the edges from time to time, and stay with your cat for the first few days.
If you cannot drill, drill-free window guards are sold elsewhere; Pelux does not sell them.

The Pelux balcony net hides a strand of stainless steel in every thread, and its black blends into the background: the view stays clear. Discover the balcony net →
Tilt-and-turn, hopper window, roof window: why is a net not the answer?
For a tilt-and-turn window, a hopper window or a roof window, the balcony net is not the right protection: the danger comes from the gap, and that gap is what needs filling or limiting.
On a tilt-and-turn window, a side guard closes the two triangles that open when the window tilts. On a hopper window, a guard or a wedge that stops the opening at a few centimetres does the same job. According to International Cat Care, a window restrictor does not solve everything: cats, and kittens in particular, can squeeze through very small spaces or get stuck trying. Set the gap for the smallest cat in the home.
With a roof window, the cat does not necessarily fall from the window: it climbs out onto the roof. You need a guard designed for that exact model: ask your window manufacturer or a DIY shop. Pelux sells none of these protections: in the meantime, the window stays shut whenever you leave the room.
If the window stays shut, how do you keep the view for your cat?
A closed window remains the simplest protection while your cat is alone, and it does not take the view away.
On a closed, smooth, clean pane, a window hammock held by suction cups gives your cat a proper spot in the sun to watch the world, with no drilling, and a maximum load of 17.5 kg according to the supplier. This hammock is never a safety device: it does not go near an open window.
Watching is only one of an indoor cat's needs: see what makes a cat happy in a flat, from play to perches.
Frequently asked questions
Is a fly screen enough to stop a cat falling?
No. According to the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, a fly screen on its own is not enough to prevent a fall: it is often fixed with light Velcro strips and a cat damages it easily. The university recommends aviary wire or a wire-reinforced net instead.
Can you still open a window fully once it is protected?
Yes, with mesh or a net covering the opening. According to International Cat Care, these let the window open fully, whereas a restrictor limits the opening to a few centimetres. They do have to cover the whole opening, with no gap at all at the bottom or sides.
Should you move furniture away from windows?
Yes, when a high window opens. International Cat Care advises moving furniture that lets a cat reach a high open window: a chest of drawers or a shelf under a hopper window works as a staircase.
Key takeaways
- The right window protection for a cat depends on how the window opens: a net for a large window opened wide, a guard or a wedge for anything that tilts.
- The Pelux balcony net, in 3 × 4 m, is named on its product page for a large window; it is fitted with a cord and hooks that need drilling, and the page gives no window-specific instructions.
- Tilt-and-turn windows, hopper windows and roof windows need a fitted guard or wedge, which Pelux does not sell; a fly screen on its own is not enough.
- After a fall or entrapment, see a vet straight away, even if your cat seems unhurt.
