How to clean a cat carrier, material by material

To clean a cat carrier, empty it, vacuum the hair out of the corners, wash the blanket separately, then wipe the fabric with a damp cloth and mild soap, the clear plastic with plain water, and leave it wide open to dry before storing it. No alcohol, no abrasives, no harsh disinfectant.

What should you do as soon as you get home?

The best time to clean a cat carrier is the evening of the journey: hair and traces of sick come off in two minutes while they are still fresh.

  1. Take everything out: blanket, absorbent pad, toy. Turn the carrier upside down and shake it.
  2. Vacuum the corners and seams with the crevice tool, where hair and bits of litter collect.
  3. For hair caught in the fabric, use a damp rubber glove, against the grain; more ideas in our guide to cat hair around the home.
  4. Wash the blanket or cushion separately, following its label.

After a vet visit, this wash matters even more: according to International Cat Care, washing the bedding from the carrier removes the smells of the clinic. In a multi-cat home, the same charity advises waiting until the returning cat has been reintroduced to the others before giving them freshly washed bedding.

How do you clean a cat carrier, material by material?

A soft carrier almost always combines several materials. These pointers work for most brands, but the manufacturer's label comes first: only the label says whether a part can go in the washing machine.

MaterialHow to clean itAvoid
Polyester or Oxford fabricDamp cloth and mild soap, then a cloth with plain waterSoaking the fabric
Ventilation meshVacuum, then dab with a damp clothPulling at the mesh
Clear PVCPlain water and a soft clothAlcohol and abrasives, which can cloud it permanently
Acrylic bubbleRemoved if it comes off, otherwise wiped in place, with warm soapy waterAny abrasive: acrylic scratches

On a foldable carrier, cleaning is easier than it looks, because everything opens up. Our foldable cat carrier unfolds completely: you can reach every wall instead of feeling around the bottom of a sagging bag. Its product page sets out the method: a damp cloth and mild soap on the polyester, plain water on the clear panel. It says nothing about machine washing.

On our clear bubble cat backpack, the bubble comes off and washes in warm soapy water; the shell and fabric wipe clean with a damp cloth.

To be honest: for cleaning, a rigid plastic carrier is still the easiest, and for trips to the vet, International Cat Care recommends a carrier that is easy to clean, preferably plastic or plastic-coated. We weighed up both designs in soft carrier or hard carrier; all our designs are in the carriers collection.

How long should a cat carrier dry before you fold it away?

A cat carrier is ready to store when it is dry everywhere, seams and corners included. There is no universal drying time: it depends on the fabric, the room and the season.

Folded while damp, a carrier traps moisture in its folds and starts to smell musty. Leave it wide open, out of direct sun and away from radiators, then slide your hand into the corners: if it feels cool to the touch, it isn't dry.

And if you have the space, leave it set up in a room: that is the whole idea behind getting your cat used to their carrier.

Which products should never go on a cat carrier?

On a cat carrier, harsh disinfectants can poison your cat, while alcohol and abrasives damage the clear parts.

  • Disinfectants that turn cloudy in water: according to International Cat Care, some of them, such as chloroxylenol, are toxic to cats.
  • Antibacterial wipes and products: many contain benzalkonium chloride, which a cat can swallow by licking a treated surface, or by grooming their paws after walking on it, according to the same charity.
  • Alcohol and cream cleaners, which dull PVC and scratch acrylic.

For everyday cleaning, diluted washing-up liquid is enough: International Cat Care lists it among the less irritating cleaners. Wipe over with plain water afterwards, and wait until everything is dry before your cat goes back in.

What about after a contagious illness or an accident?

A carrier that has held a cat with feline panleukopenia, also called feline enteritis, goes beyond everyday care. According to the MSD Veterinary Manual, this virus can persist for up to a year in the environment without proper disinfection, and it takes a strongly oxidising disinfectant, applied to a surface that has been thoroughly cleaned first, to destroy it. Ask your vet which product to use, and whether a fabric carrier is better replaced.

A urine accident is the other special case: the smell gets into the fabric and needs more than this everyday routine.

Finally, if your carrier comes out every week, think about wear as well as cleanliness: folded and unfolded very often, our foldable carrier will wear faster than a fixed one, as its product page admits. A non-folding design such as the city cat backpack will last longer.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put a cat carrier in the washing machine?

Only if its label allows it. A carrier with rigid panels, a bubble or a clear window is generally cleaned by hand: machine-wash the removable parts, and wipe the structure with a cloth.

Should you clean a new carrier before its first trip?

A wipe with a damp cloth and a few hours open in a well-aired room will clear the packaging smell. Then add a blanket your cat has already slept on, and a soft cloth rubbed on their cheeks and then into the corners of the carrier, as International Cat Care suggests.

Can the clear plastic on a carrier go clear again once it has clouded?

If the haze is a deposit, such as fingerprints or nose marks, plain water and a soft cloth will remove it. If it comes from an alcohol-based product or an abrasive, usually not: the material itself has been damaged, not just its surface dirtied.
